In collaboration with other community leaders, Dr. Anhlan served on the Executive Committee of Houston Communities for Safe Indoor Air to lead an advocacy campaign to success to pass the Smoking Ban in the City of Houston and vicinity. The organization was a coalition of 4 communities of color: Black community, Latino community, Asian community and Native American community. The coalition was supported by Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and has led the communities in Houston to the result of having the Mayor of City of Houston and his council successfully passing the smoking ban in the city of Houston in all restaurants and public places in 2007. Hundreds of hours of public education, talk show, community mobilization to gather signatures, organizing walk for safe indoor air, and partnership with public health institutions such as American Cancer society, Lung Association, etc. led to this success. Dr. Anhlan Nguyen serves as the liaison and representative for the Asian American communities in Houston, she worked with several Asian American non-profits to engage the grass-root participation in these advocacy efforts and the effort paid off.
